Communications Studies Scholarships
There are a variety of scholarships available to Communication Studies students based on both academic performance and need.

UMKC Career Services Internship Stipend Program

  • Award amount: Fall/Spring Stipend would provide students with $2,000 stipend for participating in approved unpaid fall or spring internships (150 hours worked) per student. Summer Stipend would provide students with $4,000 stipend for participating in approved unpaid summer internships (300 hours worked) per student.
  • Preference goes to internships with non-profit organizations.

Alex & Josephine B. Coleman Scholarship Fund

  • Award amount: 3 scholarships, up to $2,250 each
  • Qualifications: Applicants must be declared Communication Studies majors with a 3.3 UMKC cumulative GPA and have at least 60 credit hours by the end of the spring semester. Scholarship finalists may be asked to submit a second essay.

The Fred Andrews Jubilee Creative Cinema Fund

Faye Kircher Public Speaking Award Scholarship

  • Award amount: Varies
  • Qualifications: Outstanding performance at the Faye Kircher Public Speaking Competition. Recipients are selected by the judges.
  • How to Apply: Participants from the current semester ComSt 110 courses are selected to participate in the contest. Please contact the Communication Studies Department for more details at 816-235-1337 or by email at Com-s@umkc.edu.

Carol Koehler Memorial Scholarship

  • Award amount: Up to $1,000
  • Qualifications: This scholarship provides internship funding. Applicants must be juniors or seniors with a minimum UMKC GPA of 3.0, who have also completed at least 12 hours in Communication Studies at UMKC. The recipient is required to enroll in the department's three-hour internship course in the upcoming academic year.

Michelle LaPointe Scholarship

  • Award amount: Up to $750
  • Qualifications: Applicants must be non-traditional students who are majoring in Communication Studies; have completed a minimum of 24 hours of coursework at UMKC; and have demonstrated financial need.

G. Tom Poe Scholarship Fund for Outstanding Achievement in Film and Media Arts

  • Award amount: Up to $750
  • Qualifications: Applicants must be undergraduate students who have declared a major in Communication Studies with an emphasis in Film and Media Arts or a minor in Film Studies. Preference shall be given to a senior-level student who maintains at least a 3.0 grade point average.

John Scott Shepherd Scholarship

Suzanne Crispin Williams Scholarship

  • Award amount: Up to $1,000
  • Qualifications: Applicants must be undergraduate students in Communication Studies or Women's and Gender Studies. Preference is given to female, returning students pursuing their first undergraduate degree. Applicants must also submit an essay of approximately 1,000 words on his or her background, and describing how the scholarship will impact his or her future plans.

Walt Bodine Scholarship in Communication Studies

  • Award amount: Up to $1,000
  • Qualifications: Applicants must be undergraduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences majoring in Communication Studies with an emphasis in TV, radio, film, new media forms or community journalism.

Dianne and Charles Maggio Scholarship in Communication Studies

  • Award amount: $1,000 for Summer and $1,000 for Fall
  • Qualifications: The scholarships can be awarded to one or more students. Applicants must be students pursuing a degree in Communication Studies within the College of Arts and Sciences. Preference will be given to students who plan to enter a career in journalism or mass communications, who are in good academic standing and who demonstrate financial need.
